Have you ever wondered if the rug you saw was in fact vintage? Well, this article will identify key features of a vintage rug and how you can distinguish between the different categories of rugs.

To begin with, it would be essential to understand what the term “vintage” is and how it would potentially relate to rugs. Vintage may have different interpretations to different people and could represent antiques or items with differential ages. Most people would interpret “vintage” to be older than 40 years old to the current date.

In the context of vintage rugs, key features would be anything older than 80-100 years old would be classified as “antique” and any rug older than 20 years would be considered as vintage. The design pattern, woven structure and evidence of wear would be key factors in confirming the age of the rug.

Newer modern rugs may have a fuzzy texture since the yarns may still possess the fibrous surface. The colour or dye on the rug would also be an indicative factor. If a rug has pale colours and has faded in comparison to the natural light, then the rug could potentially be considered as vintage.

As mentioned before, the patterns would be a key tell-tale sign of a vintage rug. This would extend to where the threaded components are weaved and identify the type of rugs. An illustrative example of this would be antique Northwest Persian rugs that have Persian Heriz, Serapi or Bakshaish rugs.

The number of knots per square inch, otherwise known as “KPSI” could also be an inspection factor for vintage rugs. By counting the number of horizontal and vertical rows in one inch and multiplying the numbers together. It should be noted that various regions and time periods had various metrics and characteristics of KPSI.
